4-star S Gant sets trip to FSU, outlines his current UM recruitment

Stefan Adams
2019 Kathleen (FL) 4-star S Brendan Gant has long been a priority to the Miami Hurricanes in the 2019 class, even back when he was committed to Nick Saban and Alabama. Now a free agent after decommitting from the Crimson Tide in April, Gant says things have been good with the Canes, but he wasn’t hearing from the staff as much heading into the dead period that began at the end of last month.

“It’s been all good,” Gant said on his Miami recruitment. “I don’t know if it was the dead period approaching or whatever, or because they got some DB commits, but contact had kind of fell off a bit. It’s all good.”

UM safeties coach Ephraim Banda is leading the charge to get Gant to UM and it’s Banda’s relationship with Gant that is a big factor in keeping the Hurricanes around.

“He a good dude, he’s a family man. Just a good person,” Gant said on Banda. “The coaches, they make you feel comfortable and like they care about you as a person.”

In general, though, Gant said it’s the culture and environment surrounding the team that is the true main appeal of the Hurricanes’ program right now.

“The culture and the city, it’s just different,” Gant said on Miami. “I could see myself being a part of that, fitting into the defense. There’s a lot of Miami-Dade boys [on UM’s defense], but there’s others too.”

For the next step in the process from here, the Kathleen standout will not be at Paradise Camp in Miami on July 28th. Gant will instead be in Tallahassee and participating in the Seminoles’ camp the same weekend.

“I’m going to be at Florida State on the 28th,” Gant said. “A couple of other schools had approached me about it, but I had already made it known that I was going to be [at FSU].”

What does Gant like about Willie Taggart and the ‘Noles?

“The new energy, the coaching staff. It’s a different vibe around there,” Gant said.

With offers from everywhere around the country, Gant is feeling like he’s getting to the point in his recruitment where he wants to start narrowing things down and getting serious about a few choice schools. After he announces a top group, the 6’2” 192 pounder will begin setting his officials in preparation for an early 2019 decision date.

“I’m going to drop a top 11, and then my top 5 will be who I take officials to,” Gant said. “If I don’t announce at the Under Armour Game, then probably Signing Day.”

Can we get one of these write-ups with a guy who is actually coming to Paradise instead of some other camp? And maybe, if I'm not being too greedy, a guy who doesn't have some other school as his obvious #1 ... appreciate the work Stefan.
These kids, SMH

This is the kid we ignored Battle for and we can't even get him to visit for Paradise Camp.

Good call, Diaz.

Why are we having an interview for an FSU commit? Holy ****.

Another guy that communication has fallen off, please give us some interviews with great players that are actually communicating with our staff. It just seems like we have given up on top rated prospects, don't get me wrong stars mean nothing, but it is a lot less likely that a 3 star player will be a star compared to a high 4 star player. Just hope it is the staff focusing on some new big names

there is a method to the madness... let's see how it plays out.

How many times are we going to read this? I really appreciate your interviews, but with Elam, Rian Davis, Jaden Davis, Gant, Hammond, Sanders.. all saying the same thing, it feels like the majority of our board is a mystery. Yes, I know there were interviews with Neal, Richards and McIntosh. Those were great and I appreciate them. But ****.. thats 3 interviews with guys who say yeah the coaches are on me and 6 who say they used to be.

I feel kinda bad for you Stefan. Its gotta be frustrating for you to go back and forth with these kids, finally get an interview, ask them about the Canes and hear that the staff is no longer in contact. Does anybody know who we're actually still in contact with?

Gonna have to side with the staff on this one. Gant is one of those kids that clearly is not serious about coming to the U, but he wants our full attention. If you really want to come to the U, then come to Paradise.

Oh, and he wants to wait until NSD... Nope. Red ******* flag all the way.

Keep tabs on the kid because you never know how things will play out, but he's a soft chase -- I would not go hard for this kid at all.

FWIW Just read an article written by UF guy on their list for FNL. Says the word is Gant has already silently committed to Noles but is still making the rounds.

Have to agree you are absolutely right about mar, Stevenson, Neal and bogle. Starting to hear lack of communication with a lot of these guys in this class

I heard this as well. Seems like the staff isn't into games anymore

When the staff goes hard for kids who lean elsewhere fans are mad at that now this. If there's one thing I've learned over a decade of this game locally too many kids are about bull**** and you know what? After last season kids shouldn't have to be begged to be interested and if the coaches get that vibe **** it leave them

Just got to get some sources and find out who the staff is actually going after. Ivins don't seem to have a problem with interviewing the right targets.

There isn’t much to report at this moment. There is no reason to continue doing interviews with kids we all know don’t have interest in Miami. This is a Rivals and 247 tactic for generating pointless interviews for clicks.

Lack of communication isn’t nessecarily a bad thing. This could also mean they are zeroed in in their targets and not wasting time and resources in guys with no intention to come here. Y’all out here panicking in July like a bunch of little girls.
